Etching is a unique and very time-consuming technique that allows you to obtain a detailed image with the help of acid etching to the required depth of the pattern applied by the artist on the polished surface of the metal board. The print of such an image with the help of a special machine on moistened paper allows you to convey colors and shades more clearly. This is how the so-called Intaglio printing was born.
From the beginning of the 16th century, etching became the attainment of the best artists of almost all "Old World" countries and successfully competed with oil painting. The work of such prominent artists as Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, Francisco Goya, Giovanni Piranesi, Jacques Kahlo, Guido Reni, José Ribera is even hard to imagine without their etchings. Taras Shevchenko was one of the founders and the first great Ukrainian master of etching, and it is worth mentioning that he was awarded the title of academician for his art.
Hennady Harmider is a recognized master of this graphic technique. His series of etchings have the same unchanging significance as Carl Bossoli's unique engravings with views of Odesa in the first half of the 19th century. Reviving the images of his native city with documentary precision and high artistry, H. V. Harmider recreated the times of the "Golden Age" of our Southern Palmyra.
The filigree display of details, the ability to convey an almost tactile feeling of texture and, at the same time, a certain level of freedom inherent in perfection, give his etchings a poetic perception, fill them with the intoxicating air of the south.
Harmider's Odesa is protected from the erosion of time and gloomy everyday life. This city conquers, inspires, charges with a flow of energy and gives birth to an emotional response. Therefore, the recognizable Odesa characters and heroes hovering in the sky above the city look quite natural in his etchings. Pure magic! The magic of talent.
